Voices of the Other

Every year in February, countries around the world celebrates Black History Month. This is a great opportunity for us to learn about and celebrate the achievements of the peoples of the African Diaspora. This event should not be celebrated with sheer flowery rhetoric but as a salute to the history and resilience of the Black communities in their struggles for fairness and equality. Their achievements should be worthy of recognition and celebration not only during this period of time but year-round. Coupled with human displacement or political exile, the diasporic experience is tinted with histories of loss, dislocation and poverty.
